Special Cots for Special Care

Our inaugural Thrill Seeker Event had a big impact!

In August 2023, Matron Sarah Clarke and Dr Felicity Brokke conducted a review of certain procedures in the Special Care Ward of OFNU. They determined that upgrading the cots would be in the best interests of everyone, from baby through to staff, and the Charity received a funding request to fulfil the upgrade. The proposal asked for 10 single and 2 double (for use by twins & triplets) KanMed Cot Systems , at a cost of just over £40,000. Below is a direct quotation about the impact the purchase could have from the funding application:

Babies– easier access to our babies in these cots via removable sides; in an emergency we will be able to get to the baby easier and provide urgent care. The bed is also able to tilt which will be useful for babies with reflux. Multiple birth babies will be able to ‘bedded’ together.

Families – great benefit – as parents can elevate and lower the bed to any height to assist with cares, taking babies in and out etc. This will decrease the pressure on potential back strain and helps us become more inclusive for parents with disabilities.

Staff – increased ability to access the baby in an emergency. The bed is height adjustable - beneficial to reduce back injuries.

Unit– All other level 3 units in the area (St Peter’s, Brighton, and Ashford) have height adjustable cots with fixed sides. We would be pioneers in the area with this newer modern cot system.

The charity has been supporting OFNU for 39 years now, with the main aim always to be improving care and outcomes for these tiny patients, and their families. We voted unanimously in support of the application. Furthermore, we decided that the monies raised by our Thrill Seekers - circa £13,000 - would be put towards the purchase. It gave the team tangible results for their efforts and bravery, and is a brilliant demonstration of the work we aim to do as charity with the support of our community.

The name Oliver Fisher has long been associated with pioneering neonatal care - Our namesake, Dr Fisher, being instrumental in the development of Neonatal Care in our area. It is easy to see that the purchase and installation of these specialist cots helps further elevate the care capabilities, providing a unique differentiation from other facilities. As OFNU turns 25 years old at Medway Hospital in 2024, we feel that this purchase by the charity, and the results because of it, are a wonderful way to start this anniversary year. And we are so grateful to be able to bring our fundraisers on this journey too.
